Help save sea turtles from the endangered species list.
Every year, thousands of Green Golfina Turtles and dozens of endangered Leatherback Laud Turtles come to the shores of Playa Viva to lay their eggs. Each turtle can lay between 60-100 eggs several times in a season. The turtles come to nest year round between May and September. Over the past 50 years of commercial exploitation, poaching, and degradation of nesting and foraging habitats, most species of marine turtle have been placed on the endangered species list.
La Tortuga Viva ("Living Turtle" in Spanish) is a turtle sanctuary in Juluchuca, Guerrero, Mexico. Every night, 365 days a year, dedicated volunteers from the local community patrol the beach front and safely transplant vulnerable sea turtle eggs to be safeguarded from predators in our hatchery. Relocating nests into the sanctuary is crucial to the survival of these baby sea turtles.
GreaterGood.org partners with The Ocean Foundation to protect sea turtles that come to La Tortuga Viva to lay their eggs. Over the past 10 years, GreaterGood and La Tortuga Viva have protected and released over 500 baby sea turtles into the wild!
