Help prevent deforestation and negative health effects in Guatemala through high-efficiency cookstoves!
98% of families in rural Guatemala cook using open fires which not only consume large quantities of wood but also release toxic smoke into the home. For the average Guatemalan family of six, traditional open cooking fires consume more than a cord of firewood per month, causing deforestation on the mountains around Lake Atitlan. Household smoke causes chronic respiratory illness in women and is a risk factor associated with pneumonia, the leading cause of death in children under 5 years.
GreaterGood.org works with Tuik Ruch Lew to install ONIL energy-efficient stoves in the homes of Tzutujil Maya families. We work with the families to train them about the importance of their stoves' correct use to family health, a strengthened family economy, and the preservation of the forests for future generations. The chimney on the stove removes 99% of household air pollution and the stoves' engineered design burn 70% more efficiently, which saves both the local forest and puts money back into Maya families’ pockets.
You can help. Just $5 provides one family with a chimney-elbow for their ONIL stove. You can save the Guatemalan forest and provide a safe, energy-efficient stove for families in need.
