Help vaccinate island foxes to protect them from extinction.
The island fox lives exclusively on the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California and can't be found anywhere else on the planet. In the 1990's, the island fox population declined in catastrophic numbers, including a 90 percent population decline on Santa Catalina Island due to an outbreak of distemper virus, landing these foxes on the endangered species list. Without proper vaccination, island foxes must endure potential exposure to deadly diseases such as canine distemper and rabies.
GreaterGood.org works with the Santa Barbara Zoo to vaccinate island foxes from diseases that could result in their extinction. SBZ sends a team of conservationists, biologists, veterinary professionals, and other employees to the Channel Islands to perform general health checks and vaccinations in effort to protect these foxes. As a result of this and other shared efforts, the island fox population has returned from the brink of extinction.
Our ultimate goal is to conserve the species. The impact of this effort will be tracked and measured by monitoring Island fox populations over multiple years.
You can help. Just $19 vaccinates 1 island fox. Your donation helps conserve the species.
The Santa Barbara Zoo is dedicated to supporting local wildlife conservation programs to save threatened and endangered species such as the Island fox, California condor, snowy plover, southern sea otter, and California red-legged frog and other amphibians of concern.
